Should you try? Yes, for large pieces of fresh sushi at a reasonable price.

Tomoe Sushi

Tomoe Sushi has that local sushi joint feel, but being in Greenwich Village it’s extremely popular and busy.  I had mentioned in my post for En Japanese Brasserie I’ve found there is a class divide among Japanese restaurants in the city, but maybe I was wrong.  Tomoe’s food (particularly the fish) is very fresh and tasty and is better than your standard takeout sushi restaurant, but not overly expensive.  Is it the best sushi I’ve ever had?  No.  But for the price range, you get large pieces of fresh fish, something I’m definitely open to.

We tried their tempura appetizer (three pieces of shrimp, sweet potato and broccoli; $9.50), which had a nice batter, a little doughier and less flakey than other places.  We also tried one of their special appetizers, King crab meat with spicy mayo, which had good flavor and had a high meat:mayo ratio.  As for the rolls, we tried the Negri – Toro (fatty tuna and scallion; $7.25 for 6 pieces), Spicy Tekka (spicy mayo tuna; $7.25 for 6 pieces) and salmon avocado.

I’d definitely go back.  Just a warning though, they don’t take reservations.  You may have a short wait, or do what I did and have your friends wait on line and show up just as your table is ready…
