Should you try? Yes definitely! It’s worth the 20 mins or so train ride from the city on the 7 train.
I’ve found out about this place over a year ago and I finally got around to trying it recently for my birthday. It met my expectations, but salt and fat was definitely fatty. So don’t walk but run to this restaurant. The key is to get here before dinner time, as they don’t take reservations and is first come first serve.
They serve innovative new American cuisine with a modern twist. Now feast your eye on the senses: every table gets complimentary bacon fat popcorn, it was greasy alright! Each plate is served tapas style so it’s a good idea to go with a large group of people, so you can try many dishes out.
First we started out with the Persimmon salad which has arugula, Italian speck (prosciutto), mango, walnuts and goat cheese. It was a great way to kick off our palette, with a light vinaigrette dressing but all the favors worked really well together.
Next came one of all time favorites from the menu- pork belly tacos. I highly recommend eating it with the jalapenos that are served on the side. It adds an extra nice kick!
The pork sliders were good but nothing to rave home about- I think the bun-to-pork ratio was off.
I also recommend tapping into your more adventurous side and try the shaved foie gras (not pictured). It’s interesting how the mandarin offsets the foie flavor a bit.
As if that wasn’t enough, we also tried the Oxtail Terrine– There was no bone, just pure oxtail goodness with caramelized onions and mushrooms.
Last but not least of the tapas, there was the fried chicken. It was very tender and juicy on the inside and I love the daikon radish that goes with it. It’s hard to have just a bite but there’s just too much tasty fat to go around the table!
As for dessert, they have rice krispie with marshmallow ice cream which was a little too creamy for me, although the Lychee panna cotta with yuzu buttermilk sorbet was light and refreshing.
After a meal like this I recommend running home instead of hopping back on the 7 train.
